I grew up in the coastal city of Plymouth, with much of my childhood centred around football due to my dad who was involved with the local club, Plymouth Argyle. Most of our weekends as a family were spent following matches and travelling across the country. As a result of this I never spent much time appreciating the incredible coastal environment we had right on our doorstep.
One thing I was very fortunate to do when growing was being able to travel to many different places around the world with my family. Experiencing a variety of cultures and lifestyles. At the time I didn’t realise how lucky I was, but looking back, I’m incredibly grateful. Those early experiences have had a lasting impact and helped shape many of the things I love doing today.
In 2015 I met my partner Phoebe, who lives in a small village called Newton Ferrers, which is just 30 minutes down the road from Plymouth. Set right on the water little did I know this would be the place where one of my biggest passions would take shape and where the idea for Lazy Lures would be born.
With access to Phoebe’s dad’s boat and countless fishing spots tucked along the nearby cliffs, I quickly found myself spending more and more time out on the water. Fishing quickly became one of my favourite pastimes and for the first time I truly began to enjoy the exploration of the coastal waters that had always been so close.
What started with plenty of fishing sessions that ended in blanks quickly turned into a drive to understand more. I became eager to learn about the
species that lived in our waters, how they behaved, and what techniques and gear would give me the best chance of success. The more I studied and experimented, the more results I started to see and with each small win, my passion for fishing grew even stronger.
In early 2019, my partner Phoebe and I set off on a backpacking adventure to the other side of the world. Equipped with a travel rod that took up 3 quarters of the room in my backpack our first stop was Australia. We lived out of a camper van and travelled down the East Coast making the most of every chance I had to fish along the way, when Phoebe would let me of course. Catching small snapper along the coast and Smallmouth Nannygai and much larger snapper from a boat. It’s one of the most fulfilling feelings as an angler catching a new species of fish in a completely new environment in my opinion.
Next stop was New Zealand which brought a different pace. Traveling by buses and staying in hostels, we got to experience some of the most incredible rural landscapes I’ve ever seen. We had planned to visit eight countries in total, including spots like Fiji, Bali, and parts of Southeast Asia, but the trip was cut short due to Covid. A lot of these places will all be on my bucket list for the future.
Like many COVID brought plans to a sudden halt. But instead of hitting pause completely, I shifted my focus to what was right in front of me, the vast amount of coastline we had down in the Southwest of England. It quickly became a daily activity. Whether that was fishing, diving, or just exploring, I took
advantage of the massive amount of free time I now had. From this I began to realise how much our local waters had to offer and just how overlooked it often
is.
During this time, I spent more and more time on the water fishing with Harvey. It was then that we began questioning the gear we were using. Why did so much of the UK market feel behind compared to places like Australia? That curiosity quickly turned into something more. What started as casual ideas evolved into tangible products and before long Lazy Lures was born. Products we once had no idea how to make, became a reality overtime. Driven by the passion and belief that the UK fishing scene deserved more.
Now fast forward three years, and with Lazy Lures now firmly established in the UK fishing market, our vision began to grow beyond just fishing and brought one of our biggest passions of adventure into question. It pushed us to think bigger, to explore new ideas, and to create something that reflects not just the thrill of the catch, but the journey that comes with it.
That’s how Ebbrox was born. It's not just about targeting fish. It's about the pursuit, the places it takes you, and the moments you share along the way. Sometimes I still find myself asking, what do I enjoy more the fight itself or the adventure that surrounds it?
This is just the beginning for Ebbrox and I’m so excited to put our stamp on this market and keep pushing forward with innovation, design, and a community built around love for the water.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and let us know what drives your passion to fish!
