Fishing in Norway:
There’s something magical about standing on the rugged shores of Northern Norway, braving the -15°C chill, and casting out into the icy waters. This isn’t just any fishing trip; it’s an expedition with Lazy Lures, armed with an arsenal of Bomb Squads in a variety of colours. Our journey took us from the legendary Saltstraumen to remote coastal drop offs, and even onto the icy fjords via sailing boat.
Exploring the Saltstraumen: A Fisherman's Paradise
Our adventure began at the Saltstraumen, known as the world’s strongest tidal current. Located near Bodø, this natural phenomenon sees over 400 million cubic meters of water rush through a narrow strait every six hours, creating whirlpools up to 10 meters wide. This turbulent water is a feeding ground for massive Cod, Pollock, and Coalfish, making it an angler’s paradise.
Using the 16CM/45G Bomb Squads in colour white we cast out into the swirling currents, feeling the unmistakable tug of a hungry predator. The adrenaline rush as the rod bent under the weight of a Coalfish was unforgettable. The Arctic Assassin in its icy blue hue seemed to be the star of the show managing to snag another species, the famous Cod!
Chasing Giants at Remote Drop-Offs
Determined to find bigger catches, we traveled further north along winding, snow-covered roads. After hours of driving through breathtaking landscapes, we arrived at a secluded drop off known only to locals. Here, the water plunges rapidly from shallow reefs to deep ocean trenches, the perfect ambush point for predatory fish.
This time using the Bomb Squad 12CM Arctic Assassins, we tried our best to cast them out as far as we could. Letting the lures sink before retrieving them them very slowly with an occasional twitch. It didn’t take long before the line went taut, and a fierce battle ensued. After what felt like an eternity, we landed two enormous Pollock, their golden flanks shimmering against the snowy backdrop.
Breaking Ice and Chasing Cod in the Fjords
Venturing even further north, we boarded a Norwegian sailing boat, its hull crunching through the frozen harbour waters as we set sail on the fjords. The sheer beauty of the icy landscape was mesmerising, with snow capped peaks reflected on the still, mirror like waters. Our target? Cod. And our weapon of choice? The 16CM Pink Bubblegum Bandit. This vibrant pink lure stood out perfectly against the cold, dark waters of the fjords. As we jigged the lures deep beneath the boat, the strikes were sudden and aggressive. It wasn't long before we had found a decent spot and the fish came one after another.
After a successful day on the fjords, started to head back whilst we still had light, whilst the rest of the team were busy preparing traditional Norwegian fish soup using the day’s catch. A mixture of root veg, tomatoes and peppers paired with tender chunks of cod, made for a very tasty and warming meal.
Following Norwegian custom, we made sure to use every part of the fish, even boiling the head and eyeballs, which are considered delicacies in this part of the world. It was an experience that brought us closer to the local culture and traditions, rounding off an unforgettable fishing adventure.
Northern Norway’s untamed beauty, combined with the thrill of fishing in such extreme conditions, made for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re an experienced angler or just looking for an adventure off the beaten path, Northern Norway should definitely be on your bucket list.
